The Number 1 Beauty Step that Improves all Skin types
How to get the most from your cleanse.
From as far back as I can remember, I’ve always been interested in people's rituals and routines.
As a girl, I’d lie on my belly, on what felt like a humongous bed, and watch my mum in the evening, at her dressing table, surrounded by all these differently shaped bottles, jars and tubes.
I’d watch with fascination how she’d squirt different lotions and potions onto cotton pads, instinctively one after the other, gliding each across her face and eyelids in rhythmic motions. Repeating again with another sweet-smelling potion, and lastly rubbing cream into her face with her delicately painted fingertips.
We won’t talk about the funny faces she’d pull while doing this, she’d never forgive me, but I always knew by her doing this, that this was a form of self-care, not just for her skin, but for herself.
Today, as an adult in my forties, I have my own rituals, just like you probably do, around your own skincare routine.
Products may have changed over the years but there are a few things I refuse to compromise on, and you may be able to relate to these.
The first is finding the best moisturiser suitable for my skin.
And the second (which is usually forgotten about, but makes a world of difference), is a cleansing routine
Cutting this out of my skincare routine, and thinking I’m saving time is a definite no! When I have, I’ve seen a decline in the overall health of my skin and I’ve been disappointed in my usual products not working as well as they usually do.
Cleansing is what I like to think of as the first step to getting the best out of the rest of your beauty products. A good cleanse once or twice daily can easily get you more effective results from the rest of your skincare products which in turn can save us time and money in the long run. Win, win!
By all means you don’t need to be an expert to get started on an effective routine and the results are truly worth it. It doesn’t have to be complicated or take up hours of your time when you could be watching your favourite Netflix series.
Cleansing needs to be as gentle, but as thorough as possible. Removing make-up which has been sitting on the skin for hours, and unclogging any pores is quite a big job for one product to do, but using the right ones can be a game changer.
I’ve discovered a simple app which I’ve been working with for a while now, which I’ll link here.
This clever little app gives a quick, free skin consultation that helps you reach any skincare goals you want to achieve, be it less fine lines, smoother texture etc. of which I have personal experience using and is something I also use on customers in my own
salon to complete an assessment of their skin.
Expert Tip
A tip I’d like to share with you, which I find works really well, is that I like to use a device rather than my hands for my cleansing.
I use the lumi spa which has 7 skin benefits ,a silicone brush head which doesn’t irritate or leave my skin feeling tight and dry but instead it feels wonderfully nourished and fresh.
It’s tough enough to remove any layer of stubborn makeup or oils that have been covering my skin, but gentle enough not to cause any abrasion which in turn I’ve found causes unnecessary dryness and irritation. Not something I want to spend more time and money trying to remedy!
Another tip is to use a mist or lukewarm water when cleansing to avoid drying out the skin's natural oils. We want to keep these locked in to encourage the skin to stay plump and full of moisture giving that gorgeous goddess glow, so little steps along the way all amount to better skin health.
Please let me know if you’ve found these tips useful or would like more advice on any other topics.
